The Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards 2024, held in London, have recognized Sri Lanka as the ‘Most Desirable Island in the World.’

Sri Lanka has been recognized as the most attractive and desirable island destination in the world, as voted by readers of Wanderlust magazine. This award is a big deal because it shows Sri Lanka’s successful recovery from recent challenges and extols its potential as a dream destination
More than 200,000 travelers voted for Sri Lanka, proving its powerful appeal and attractions.
Sri Lanka has put on a strong performance a stunning comeback, rising from eighth place to complete the Gold award.
Announcing the results Wanderlust said: “Known as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, the nation’s history comes to life through spectacular monuments such as Sigiriya Rock, the cave temples of Dambulla, and the ancient ruins of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.”
“Elsewhere, its leopard-filled national parks and the jungle-fringed beaches of Tangalle and Trincomalee show off the island’s natural side. But, more recently, it’s the tea plantations and lush highlands of the Centre that have caught the eye, with the fresh addition of the Pekoe Trail offering an exciting new way to explore Sri Lanka’s green heart.”
Taiwan won second place in the category of “Most Desirable Island”, while Puerto Rico won third place in the same category.

In the 23rd annual Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards, over 168000 people participated by casting more than 3 million votes. These votes were used to determine the winners of various travel categories.
The Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards 2024 Celebrated the best of travel, recognizing 22 categories of destinations, operators, and brands. These categories included awards for the most desirable countries and cities in both Europe and the rest of the world.
