This May, airlines worldwide are launching numerous new routes as the summer travelling season starts and demand in the major international markets is steadily growing.
May 2026 will be one of the busiest months in terms of new routes being introduced, especially in transatlantic networks between North America and Europe.
Some of the leading airlines are increasing their services by adding new long-haul and seasonal flights. Delta Air Lines has also introduced new flights between Seattle and Rome as well as Barcelona, which has solidified its position in Europe. The airline is also introducing flights between Boston and Madrid and Nice as well as new summer flights between New York and destinations like Porto and Sardinia.
United Airlines is still pursuing its policy of flying to less congested European destinations. New routes are Newark to Bari and Santiago de Compostela, and Washington Dulles to Reykjavik. The airline has also started to fly between Newark and Glasgow during the summer period.
Another American Airlines that is expanding its European network is the new daily flights between Philadelphia and Budapest and Prague. Moreover, the airline has also initiated flights between Dallas/Fort Worth and Athens and Zurich, providing travellers with more direct flights to Central and Southern Europe.
In the meantime JetBlue is expanding into Europe with a new seasonal flight between Boston and Milan, that adds further competition to the ever-growing transatlantic leisure market.
These new services are indicative of a broader trend within the aviation industry whereby airlines are not only targeting major cities but also smaller destinations to accommodate the increasing passenger numbers. A lot of the routes are seasonal and have been created to accommodate peak summer traffic and provide the passenger with more choice and flexibility.

All in all, the initiation of approximately 50 new routes in this month is a sign of great confidence in the recovery of global travelling and the further development of the international air connection.
