“travelling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”

Hi, fellow travellers, and welcome! In case you see this, you have agreed to the call for the exploration of a very unique part of the world. I’m and just like you, I am a fan of such trips that change the heart. I can guarantee you that nowhere has touched my soul more deeply than South Korea, which makes it one of the top South Korea places to visit.

Put aside the stereotypes. This country is full of sharp, lovely contradictions. The bright, futuristic extension of Seoul is a perfect match to the quiet, ancient wisdom of mountain temples that are thousands of years old. It is the place where the leading edge of K-Pop and global tech is coming from the ancient Joseon Dynasty, which is perhaps what South Korea famous for now.

According to Henry Miller, “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” And South Korea is definitely the place to do that.

I would be your personal guide through the next chapters of my guide, sharing not only the list but also my most valuable finds: from the amazing beaches of Busan to the volcanic grandeur of Jeju Island. If you are looking for lively street food, peaceful nature, or rich heritage, your trip to South Korea is here and now. So, let’s discover the best places to visit in South Korea.

Are you willing to uncover the hidden gems? We should get started with the absolute best places to visit in South Korea, attractions, and the things to do in South Korea to turn this trip into your most unforgettable story.

1. Seoul: The Heartbeat of the Nation (Tradition Meets Tomorrow)

A brightly lit, ornate carousel with white horses and a red canopy, representing one of the best places to visit in South Korea, stands outdoors on a snowy evening in Seoul.

Without a doubt, the first South Korea places to visit  when you travell in South Korea is none other than its fabulous capital, Seoul, one of the premier tourist spots in Korea.  This mega-city is full of beautiful contradictions, and I assure you, a week is the bare minimum to just scratch its surface and see all the beautiful places here.

Top Destinations & Attractions:

  • Gyeongbokgung Palace: Experience history through the eyes of the present at Gyeongbokgung Palace, the most magnificent and largest of the Five Royal Palaces from the era of the Joseon Dynasty. one of the essential things to do in Seoul is to visit it. Make sure to witness the vividly colourful changing of the Royal Guard ceremony and if you want to be part of the event, wear a traditional hanbok (Korean dress) , usually, those in hanbok get free admission! Not far from there, Changdeokgung Palace with its peaceful Secret Garden (Huwon) is waiting for you to relax and rejuvenate, a perfect example of the beautiful places in Korea.
  • Bukchon Hanok Village: Between the two main palaces lies this delightful hill neighborhood which can be described as a living museum. Stroll the tight lanes bound by the centuries-old Korean houses (Hanok). You can hardly find such a place as this one where you can totally dive into the past while at the same time sipping your coffee which is a product of today’s culture but still in a traditional setting.
  • N Seoul Tower (Namsan Tower): Want the most spectacular panoramic views of the entire city that sprawls out in every direction? Go to the top of Namsan Mountain. The view from the tower’s observation platform is stunning, in particular, at twilight, and is well-known for the number of New Year’s resolutions or love promises, written view letters, which couples leave there.
  • Insadong & Myeongdong: Step into the creative, old-fashioned world of Insadong, where you can shop for handmade products, antiques, and enjoy traditional tea. After that, drop yourself into the live and energized world of Myeongdong, which is the ultimate dream place for K-beauty, fashion shopping, and street food.

Things to Do:

  • Bukhansan National Park Hike: Indeed, there is a national park in the city! Take a refreshing hike with the locals up one of the beautiful mountains that surround Seoul. The views are a stunning blend of nature and the city extending as far as you can see, one of the best things to do in South Korea.

The Street Food to the Fullest: Just try one fresh and hot crispy hotteok (sweet pancakes) or a spicy tteokbokki (rice cakes) and you will be hooked to the street food scene forever. Gwangjang Market is an epic where to visit in South Korea. to eat like a king.

2. Busan: The Coastal City (Beaches, Art & Seafood)

The dazzling night view of Busan's illuminated Gwangan Bridge and skyscraper skyline is one of the best places to visit in South Korea.

This is where to visit in South Korea if you want a change of pace; in just a few hours using the high-speed KTX train, you can escape from Seoul’s hard pound of the heart to Buan’s laid-back, salty atmosphere of South Korean’s second-largest city and main port. Busan is definitely one of the best places to visit in South Korea for coastal beauty and urban life.

Top Destinations & Attractions:

  • Gamcheon Culture Village: This is Best Referred to As the “Machu Picchu of Busan,” Which is a lively and colourful hillside village of Busan that used to be a slum and has been rebuilt as a street art gallery. One can easily spend an entire day getting lost in the maze of narrow streets, taking pictures of the wall paintings, and locating the Little Prince sculpture that is well-known.
  • Haedong Yonggungsa Temple: This is possibly the most stunning temple that has come across my eyes. While all other temples in Korea are set in the mountains, this one stands out as it is beautifully located right on the coast, facing the wave of the East Sea. The temple’s superb views of the rising sun are enchanting.
  • Haeundae Beach: This place is known worldwide because of its long beach of white sand, and skyscrapers around it and this is the place to enjoy the summer season. One can take a quiet walk, inhale the fresh sea air, or just watch what people are doing.

Things to Do:

  • Busan’s Jalgachi Fish Market is a massive and very noisy but truly nice and real places in Korea to spend your time. Take your pick from a live fish or any kind of seafood and have it made right away at a restaurant nearby. There is no other meal fresher than this one.

To get an unusual ocean view, you can take a ride on either one of the bright yellow Sky Capsules or the Beach Train along the Haeundae Blue Line Park. What a charming and beautiful way it is to see the coast! This is one of the essential things to do in South Korea.

3. Jeju Island: The Island of the Gods (Natural Wonders & Romance)

Coastal trail and dramatic cliffside view of the deep blue ocean under a bright sky, characteristic of the best places to visit in South Korea, such as Jeju Island.

Jeju Island, also known as “Hawaii of Korea,” is a place of wonder both for the earth and the human eye, showing truly what is South Korea is famous for in terms of natural beauty. A short domestic flight from Seoul, this volcanic island is all about breathtaking nature and quiet adventure, making it one of the best places to visit in South Korea for nature lovers.

Top Destinations & Attractions:

  • Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak: The island’s most photographed and dramatic, towering out of the sea is this giant volcanic tuff cone. Go up the steep path early to see the sun coming up (thus the name ‘Sunrise Peak’) changing the deep blue night to a fiery orange and red colours that will stun you.

It is a fantastic cultural tradition, which is absolutely different from anywhere else in the world. Most of the time, you can find them at the foot of Seongsan Ilchulbong. This is a crucial cultural experience and one of the best things to do in South Korea.

It was the capital of the Silla Kingdom, the ancient Korean empire, for almost 1,000 years, and as a result, the city is packed with the relics of the past. FAQ

Why is renting a hanbok at the Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul an important experience?

Apart from history, what makes Gyeongju one of the most romantic places in Korea?

Gyeongju is known for the beautiful ambiance at night, and specifically the evening at Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, where lights have illuminated the architecture and the water, evoking a very romantic, historic feel.

Should tourists of the DMZ be worried about geopolitical tension?

While the DMZ will be an incredible historic experience, the tours are highly monitored, and tourists are quite safe in the region. The trip operates with carefully regulated military and civilian leadership areas to protect visitors.
