Did you know?

Where is East Midlands Airport? East Midlands Airport (EMA) is an international airport in the East Midlands of England. It is near Castle Donington, northwest of Leicestershire, between Loughborough, Derby, and Nottingham. To the south is Leicester, and to the northeast is Lincoln. East Midlands Airport (EMA) is 11 miles from Derby. It’s also easy to get to from Nottingham and Leicester by car or public transit.

East Midlands Airport was built in the 1970s, but it has been constantly improved to become the beautiful airport it is now. It’s easy to see why this smaller airport is just outside the ten busiest in the UK. It has many stores, five car rental companies, good transportation links, and 17 airlines that fly more than 4.7 million passengers annually. It’s the second-largest cargo airport in the UK, sitting just behind Heathrow!

There are flights to Nottingham East Midlands Airport from all over Europe, such as Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Alicante, Tenerife, and Fuerteventura in Spain. Roads to and from Dublin, Edinburgh, and Glasgow are also very busy.

EMA has won many awards lately, including the World’s Leading Eco-Friendly Airport and Best Regional Airport (British Travel Award 2010). However, many users say that long security lines, crowded waiting areas, and confusion because facilities are spread out too far from each other are all symptoms of increased traffic and a lack of investment in infrastructure.

How East Midlands Airport Began

The East Midlands Airport is in North West Leicestershire. It is the main airport for travellers from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and the areas around it, such as North Yorkshire and Staffordshire. Now that more than 20 companies are based there, East Midlands is one of the largest airports in the UK.

The military history of East Midlands Airport

At first, in wheres east midlands, the airport was an RAF base called RAF Castle Donington. It was used during the Second World War. It was taken out of service in 1946, and the Local Government Authorities bought it. But it wasn’t until 1964 that plans were made to build a new runway and turn the airbase into an airport. Next year, in 1965, they were able to let travellers in. It was now called East Midlands Airport.

Ownership in the East Midlands

The local governments that bought the airport kept it until 1993, when, despite more travellers and goods using it, they couldn’t find the money to make it bigger, so East Midlands Airport was sold to private investors. The National Express Group paid £24.3m for the airport and could start investing in its growth. But in 2000, National Express focused on only running buses and trains. In March 2001, they sold the airport to Manchester Airports Group.

Airlines that fly out of East Midlands

Several small and big companies are flying out of East Midlands Airport right now. These include Thomas Cook, Thomson Airways, Ryanair, BMI, and Jet2.com. Every airline goes to many places, but few fly internationally. The Long Haul program underwent a big change in 2005, though, and First Choice Airways now flies to the Dominican Republic, Orlando, Cancun, and Goa.

Where is East Midlands Airport? Getting into town?

Train: East Midlands Parkway is the closest rail stop, only 4 miles from the airport. There is no shuttle or bus service to the stop, but you can book an Arrow Car beforehand. Currently, airlines need to see valid photo IDs for domestic trips. Your airline can tell you what kinds of photo IDs are accepted. Different airlines have different check-in times, so please make sure you know the following:

  • Three hours before the flight for Jet2, TUI, and Thomas Cook

Airport Safety at East Midlands

East Midlands Airport prioritises the safety and security of its customers and employees. Passing through security takes a few steps, but we’re here to make it easy.

What do I have to bring through security?

Liquids

You can bring liquids on flights, but there is a limit on how much you can bring in your carry-on. We suggest putting liquids in your checked luggage. If you have drinks in your carry-on, they must follow these rules:

  • All gels, sprays, and liquids must be less than 100 ml each. They must be packed in a clear plastic bag that can be closed repeatedly and is no bigger than 20 cm x 20 cm.
  • Travellers can only bring one of these clear bags on board as carry-on items.
  • You should take this clear plastic bag from your carry-on gear and put it in the clear tray.

Water

Other drinks

Toothpaste

Hand sanitiser

Sun cream

Moisturiser

Perfume/aftershave

Make-up

Inhaler

Contact lens solution

Shower gels

Shaving foam

Aerosols (deodorant/hairspray)

Food items

Jam

Tip:  You can use any clear plastic bag that can be closed repeatedly, like a freezer or make-up bag. If you forget this, you can get a clear plastic bag at the airport, but everyone can only get one. Preparing your liquid bag before you get to the airport will help the queue for East Midlands Airport Security move faster.

Electronics

Some electronics can be brought in your carry-on, but anything bigger than an A5 (20cm x 20cm) sheet of paper needs to be removed from your bag and put in your tray to be checked separately at security.

Tablets and iPads

Laptops

Hair appliances

E-cigarettes/vapes

Cameras

Docking station

Chargers

Speakers

Electric shaver

Iron

Passport Control

Control of Passports

It would help if you went through the usual passport and customs checks when you get to East Midlands Airport. There will be different lanes for travellers from the EU and travellers from other countries. Travellers with ePassports can skip long lines at automated passport gates.

Gates for ePassports

Border Force is dedicated to providing safe, effective, and streamlined border controls, utilising cutting-edge technology to aid it. Travellers with a new type of passport will soon be able to use an automatic gate system in the Arrivals Hall at East Midlands Airport. Because of facial recognition technology allows travellers to cross the line without seeing a line Force Officer.

Travellers with an ePassport with a chip and mark on the front cover can use it. Participants must be 12 years old and from the UK, the EU/EEA, or Switzerland (you must be over 18 if you’re not with an adult). There is no need to register or fill out an application form. Travellers outside the EEA can use the gates as long as registered travellers. Border Force agents watch the gates, pick out travellers turned away by the system, and check them by hand.

Customs and the Coming In

Please remember that all travellers will need to go through Customs and Immigration. The Border Force protects the border and helps the country’s economy by making it easier for legal travellers and things to move around and stopping travellers who would harm coming into the UK.

After going through passport control, you will reach the Baggage Reclaim hall to receive your checked-in bags. Read the screens to determine which wheel you need to go to. The page for lost and delayed bags can be found here.

Lost Property

Did you lose something on the flight, or didn’t your bags appear on the carousel?

You should call the airline’s handling agent if you lose or find something in the baggage claim area, on an aeroflight, or in the carousel. This includes lost luggage while in transit.

Here are the ways to get in touch with a handling person for each airline:

Call swissport east midlands airport at 01332 814203 for Aurigny, Ryanair, and TUI.

Swissport is open from 9:30 a.m. to midnight, Monday through Friday, and from 13:30 p.m. to midnight, Saturday and Sunday.

For Jet2, call 01332 406984; the line is open 24 hours daily.

If you leave something behind at the airport

The fastest way to contact the lost property team at East Midlands Airport if you’ve lost or found something is to use the comments form.

They’ll contact you within 14 days if they find the item.

Escape Lounge

Escape Lounges is a great place to start your trip. We can meet your needs whether you’re going for business or pleasure, alone or with your family. Relax in a cosy area and grab a snack from our free bar or chef’s table before your flight.

Services at the airport

  • Money and communications: public phones, ATMs, and places to swap money.
  • Luggage: Each airline treats questions about lost luggage separately. Lost-and-found information is available at the information desk.
  • For business and conferences: The Penauille Servisair Executive Lounge has tables, a phone, a fax machine, the Internet, newspapers, and drinks. It’s open every day from 4:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Other Facilities: The building also has massage chairs, first-aid rooms, nursing rooms, prayer rooms with chaplains, play places for kids and a travel agency.
  • WI-FI: The airport building’s Wi-Fi is free for 30 minutes. After that, you’ll have to pay as you go.
  • Shopping: Boots, WHSmiths, Accessorise, and Style are some of the few stores in East Midlands. A duty-free shop also sells watches, perfume, tobacco, booze, and cosmetics. The only store before security is a gift shop with items related to flying.
  • Food and drinks: There aren’t many food and drink options at East Midlands Airport, but you’ll be able to find something to eat. AMT Coffee and Caffe Ritazza are two places you can go before security. You can find Burger King, SoHo Coffee Company, Three Shire Foodmarket, and The Runway Bar in the arrivals area. There are also Greggs and AMT Coffee machines for a pick-me-up after a trip.
