Hello, fellow travellers, Welcome to my part of the internet, where we chase sunsets, taste exotic dishes and explore the beauty of this amazing world! If you are anything like me, your heart is dancing to a distant drum, and your spirit is anxious for the excitement of discovery. Today, we head off to a land of infinite beauty, ancient culture, and bountiful warmth that will grasp your spirit the very moment you arrive, Indonesia. 

As the great Ibn Battuta once said, “Travelling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” I can assure you, Indonesia will have stories to tell you, in the soft wind blowing through rice paddies, underneath the earth from active volcanoes, or crashing waves on magnificent beaches. So come along, travellers, and pack your imaginary backpack and let’s go on an incredible trip to Indonesia together. I am excited to be your transport for a discovery of the best places to visit in Indonesia: “Top 15 Indonesia Tourist Places: Must-See Destinations & Things to Do on Your Trip.” This detailed guide indonesia is your first step. Get your bags packed because Indonesia is calling!  

1. Bali: The Island of Gods.

No trip to Indonesia would truly be complete without visiting the famous Bali. This is more than a place; this is a lifestyle; a feeling; a spiritual awakening. You will see when you touch the sacred earth of Bali why it is dearly known as the “Island of Gods.” ” Where to visit in Indonesia, you ask? Bali is the essential starting point for any Indonesia travell guide.

What to Do:

  • Experience The Culture of Ubud: Ubud is the cultural hub of Bali so lean to absorb it! You could visit the historic temples of Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave), look into the lush Tegalalang Rice Terraces, or find your center in a yoga or meditation class with enormous views of verdant valleys. Be sure to catch at least one traditional Balinese dance performance! 
  • Waterfalls: Bali also has some stunning waterfalls. Two of my favourites are Tegenungan Waterfall, where you can swim in a refreshingly cool cascade, and Sekumpul Waterfall with its breathtaking collection of seven falls- it’s worth the adventure to see it. 
  • Sunset at Tanah Lot: This famous sea temple, located on a rock formation in the ocean, provides some of the most stunning sunset views you will ever see. The silhouette of the temple over a beautiful sunset is pure magic. 
  • Surfing the Waves: Whether you are an expert or beginner, Bali’s beaches have waves for every level. Head to Seminyak or Canggu for popular surf spots or you can find more beginner-friendly waves at Kuta Beach.
  • Island Hopping to Nusa Islands: The Nusa Islands (Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan) are a short boat ride away and have steep cliffs and bright blue waters, as well as great snorkelling and diving. You can experience some incredible views and beaches at Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida, which is not to be missed! 

2. Yogyakarta: The Soul of Java

The iconic Tugu Yogyakarta (White Pal Monument), a white and gold obelisk, stands in the middle of a busy street intersection under a clear blue sky in Indonesia, one of the best places to visit in indonesia.

Full of history and Javanese culture, Yogyakarta (also known as ‘Jogja’) is the heart and soul of Java. This was the site of ancient kingdoms, which left behind incredible temples and a rich arts culture. 

Things to Do 

  • Borobudur Sunrise: Watching the sun rise over the ancient Buddhist temple of Borobudur is transcendent. As the mist rises, revealing the stupas and Buddha statues, you may actually feel like you are in a time capsule.
  • Prambanan Temples: Visit the majestic Hindu temple complex of Prambanan, dedicated to the Trimurti of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The tall, thin spires will astonish you.
  • Kraton (Sultan’s Palace): Visit (and walk through) Javanese royalty at the Sultan’s Palace. The Sultan has lived there, and it is still the residence of the current Sultan.
  • Walk Malaysboro Street: This vibrant street is the commercial center ofYogyakarta. Buy batik and other crafts, and enjoy great street food.
  • Ramayana Ballet: Watch an outdoor performance of the Ramayana ballet at Prambanan in front of the temples while they are lit up, and enjoy a stunning cultural experience.

3. Komodo National Park: Land of Dragons

Get ready to see real life dinosaurs. Komodo is home to the daunting Komodo dragons along with some of the world’s most beautiful marine wildlife.  This is one of the top Indonesia tourist places you should add to your itinerary.

  • Meet the Komodo Dragons: Take a guided view of these beautiful reptiles in their natural habitat on Komodo or Rinca Island. Humbling/terrifying!

  • Kayaking & Paddleboarding:  you can kayak and paddleboard through peaceful clear waters and around mangrove forests and karst islands.
  • Island Hopping: discover beautiful pristine lagoons, beaches and viewpoints like Piaynemo with incredible views of mushroom-shaped islands.
  • Birdwatching: Lastly, Raja Ampat is also known for many bird species, including the special Birds of Paradise.

5. Gili Islands: A True Island Experience

Located just off the coast of Lombok are the Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air), which have the feeling of an island paradise, with little cars, uncrowded beaches, and beautiful coral reefs.

  • Snorkelling and diving with turtles: The Gilis are well known for their sea turtles that won’t be difficult to spot. Simply join a trip or dive if you’re certified, and be sure to enjoy the underwater scenery around the Gilis.
  • Lie on the beach: Find your perfect spot, and work on your tan in a nice, relaxed atmosphere.
  • Gili Trawangan nightlife: If you’re in Gili T, you will be hard-pressed to not enjoy a livelier atmosphere at beachside cafés and delicious seafood BBQs.
  • Horse back riding at sunset: a romantic way to enjoy the sunsets on the Gilis.

6. Lake Toba: A Volcanic Marvel

  • Relax on Samosir Island: Rent a scooter to explore the island and visit Batak villages, ancient tombs, and Tupai local market.

  • Sunlight at Mount Penanjakan: Awake before dawn, trek to Mount Penanjakan viewpoint for an unsurpassed view at sunrise of Mount Bromo, Mount Semeru and the surrounding Tengger massif.
  • Hike into the crater: After sunrise, descend into the ‘Sea of Sand’ and hike across the sandy expanse to the base of Mount Bromo and climb stairs to peer into its smoking crater.• Explore the ‘Sea of Sand’: Experience this surreal volcanic ash desert on a jeep tour.

8. Lombok: Indonesia’s Hidden Paradise

Frequently overlooked in favour of more iconic Bali, Lombok has a chance for a more dramatic and genuine, but also lesser-developed, experience, with beautiful beaches, beautiful waterfalls, and the mighty Mount Rinjani as well.  Indonesia places to visit often include Lombok for its unspoiled charm.

What to Do:

  • Trek Mount Rinjani. This is a multi-day trek that will take you to the summit of Indonesia’s second-highest volcano, and despite being challenging, the views are stunning and worth every step! 
  • Surf Gerupuk or Desert Point. Lombok has some world-class surfing breaks, especially on the south coast. 
  • Chill on Southern Beaches. Lombok has some beautiful and untouched white-sand beaches like Mawun, Selong Belanak, and Tanjung Aan, with easy swimming and sunbathing. 
  • Visit Sendang Gile & Tiu Kelep Waterfalls. These two beautiful waterfalls can also be accessed from the foot of Rinjani and are easy to reach, with beautiful spots to cool off in the water!

9. Flores: Gateway to Adventure

Flores, which means “flowers” in Portuguese, is a colourful island in East Nusa Tenggara, sometimes referred to as a beginning to Komodo National Park itself but has a lot to offer on its own.

  • Kelimutu Coloured Lakes: See the stunning transformation of the colours of the three crater lakes of Mount Kelimutu; this is definitely one of a kind.  
  • Snorkelling & Diving: Check out the amazing underwater life that is abundant around Labuan Bajo, which is the main hub of Flores. 
  • Padar Island Viewpoint: Although this viewpoint is part of Komodo National Park, it is typically accessed from Labuan Bajo on Flores.
