The Airports Council International (ACI), the trade group for airports worldwide, released its yearly rankings on Monday. Atlanta’s international airport saw an 11.7% rise in traffic compared to the year before when it was also the biggest airport in the world.

The need for domestic flights stayed high, and ACI’s report showed that 96.8% of the 2019 passenger flow level had been recovered. The most positive trend was the return of foreign air travel, which grew by a strong 36.5% and saw 90.4% of the passengers it had before the pandemic.

  • In 2023, 8.5 billion travellers will have flown internationally, which is 93.8% more than in the years before the pandemic.
  • Asian airports are becoming more popular; some are now among the world’s biggest ten airports.
  • Jackson Hartsfield: In 2023, over 104 million travellers used Atlanta as their travel hub, making it the busiest airport in the world.

What is the busiest airport in the world? In 2023, more than 104 million travellers went through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), making it one of the biggest in the world. Except for 2020 (during the pandemic), it has stayed in this spot since 1998. The total number of travellers is 11.7% higher than in 2022, but it is still 5.3% less than in 2019.

This Atlanta airport can be reached nonstop from over 150 U.S. cities and 70 foreign ones in Asia, Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, South America, and Central America. ATL was also the first airport in the world to serve more than 100 million travellers in a single year, making history.

Atlanta International Airport offers many things to do and see for travellers with long layovers. These include art shows, bookstores, a spa, and high-end stores.

Dubai International Airport, UAE

Dubai International Airport (DXB) handled 87 million passengers in 2023, ranking it the second busiest airport globally. With more than 100 flights, it connects more than 240 cities across six continents.

The figure is rapidly increasing. Currently, it’s up 31.7% from 2022, up 0.7% from 2019. DXB was ranked fifth in 2022. Its ascent to the top spot in 2023 demonstrates how much the Middle Eastern aviation industry has expanded.

Dubai’s airport serves as a significant hub for international long-haul flights. Because it offers free Wi-Fi for all users and a wide range of other user-friendly amenities, DXB is among the greatest airports in the world.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, USA

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, USA - World Flight Vibes

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport was the third-largest on the list in 2023, serving 81.8 million passengers. The U.S. has the most airport visitors of any nation, as evidenced by the fact that this is the second U.S. airport among the top three. From 2022 to 2019 and from 2019 to 2022, there was an 11.4% increase in tourists.

DFW aircraft serve more than 193 domestic and 67 international locations nonstop. It offers excellent services and modern facilities, making it a fantastic place for clients to hang out. Furthermore, flying from Dallas to many locations is not pricey. For instance, flights to Edinburgh, Rome, and Lisbon are all reasonably priced.

Heathrow Airport, U.K.

Tokyo Haneda International Airport (HND) saw a 55% increase in visitors in 2023 compared to 2022. The airport saw the largest increase in passengers as a result. It served over 78.7 million travellers in 2023, rising from 16th place in 2022 to fifth place.

HND is one of the greatest airports in the world, offering excellent food, services, and comfort. It is divided into three ends. Terminals 1 and 2 are the primary hubs for domestic flights. International planes land at Terminal 3. Terminal 3 also has Tokyo Pop Town and Edo Marketplace. These have stores and pubs to check out, making them enjoyable places to spend time during a layover.

Denver International Airport (DEN) in Colorado handled 77.8 million passengers in 2023, roughly 12.3% more than in 2022. However, the population had only increased by 12.8% from 2019. A healthy increase is anticipated now that it has returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Many planes, both domestic and international, stop in Denver, a significant hub for transfers. There isn’t an airport like Denver International in the entire globe. It features amusement parks, retail centres, and much more. The airport’s award-winning design and the breathtaking vistas of the Rocky Mountains are popular attractions.

It is the seventh biggest airport in the world, with 76 million passengers passing through it in 2023. This number is about 18.3% higher than in 2022, but IST has done 46% better than its 2019 passenger totals.

IST serves more than 350 cities in 110 countries. Millions of travellers will be able to use it by 2025, making it a big success for the Turkish government. In addition, travellers with a long stay at Istanbul Airport can find plenty to do in the city in a single day.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) is ranked ninth (the fifth U.S. airport in the top ten), with over 74 million passengers handled in 2023. The number is still 12.7% less than 2019, even if it is an 8.1% increase from 2022.

ORD operates over 560 flights to more than 150 domestic locations and over 45 daily flights to international locations in Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. It is one of the six airports in the U.S. that accepts Touchless Identity Solution, a TSA Precheck programme that expedites check-in and boarding.

Even with a 21.4% increase in travellers between 2022 and 2023, the airport’s ranking among the busiest in the world fell from ninth to tenth. Nevertheless, there has been a 5.4% rise compared to 2019 data.

Delhi, the capital of India, and the National Capital Region (NCR) rely heavily on this airport as their main aviation centre. Over 145 domestic and international destinations are connected to India through the daily flights operated by 69 airlines.

Travellers from all over the world are drawn to India by its natural beauty and diversity. Unsurprisingly, India might be the travel destination with the fastest growth in 2024.
